The Soul Collection

Few creatures command as much reverence and fascination as the elephant in the natural world. With their intricate social structures and profound emotional depth, the matriarchs of elephant herds embody centuries of wisdom. Their culture is one of the things that confounds us the most. In this portrait titled 'Minerva,' meaning woman of great wisdom, I used iridescent gold to capture the light and create a mesmerizing shimmer, highlighting the wrinkled visage won through her experience. Each crease and fold tells a story of a life lived with grace and dignity, of trials endured and triumphs celebrated. The depth of her gaze conveys an insight that transcends language. 'Minerva' symbolizes strength and resilience, guiding her family through life's challenges with a steady hand and a compassionate heart. One cannot help but feel humbled by the sheer magnitude of her presence. Through this portrait, I sought to capture not just the physical likeness of an elephant but the essence of her being—the timeless, quiet grace that defines her existence. It is a testament to the enduring power of these magnificent creatures and a reminder of the importance of preserving their habitat and way of life for generations to come.

For thousands of years, First Nations people have walked on this land. Their relationship with the land is at the centre of their lives.  Wherever you are, please take a moment to reflect on the traditional caretakers of the lands you call home.  Here in Bruce County, Ontario, I want to acknowledge the traditional Territory of the Anishinabek Nation: The People of the Three Fires known as Ojibway, Odawa, and Pottawatomie Nations. And further give thanks to the Chippewas of Saugeen, and the Chippewas of Nawash, now known as the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, as the traditional keepers of this land. I want to acknowledge further the more recent history and ongoing connections the Saugeen Metis have to this place. May we all, as Treaty People, live with respect on this land and live in peace and friendship with all its diverse peoples.
